Christina Quarles

Christina Quarles's acrylic canvases feature colorful, contorted bodies that reflect the complexity of identity and aesthetic form. Quarles draws from her personal experiences as a queer cisgender woman with Black and white parentage, exploring contradictions of appearance and actuality, as well as the importance of diverse perspectives. Her artwork combines emotive, gestural brushwork with solid, static fields to convey a sense of intimacy, imagination, and restraint. Quarles obtained her MFA from Yale in 2016 and completed a residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture the same year. Since then, her work has been exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the Hammer Museum, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Hayward Gallery, Pérez Art Museum Miami, and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, among others. Quarles's artwork has fetched prices ranging from four to six figures at auction.
