Robert Fontaine Gallery, located in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District, will showcase new works by Australian artist Anthony Lister in a solo exhibition entitled “Black Door Limousine.” The opening reception will be held Saturday, April 11th from 5 to 9 p.m. during Wynwood’s Second Saturday Art Walk. The exhibit will be on view April 11 - through April 26th 2015.

Black Door Limousine is a survey into the idea of celebrity as it relates to the current contemporary art world. When celebrity clashes with notoriety and its effect on our beastly imagination how has this redefined the role of an artist and the work that comes from it.

Who determines when the villain arrives or how the hero is perceived? From this work I hope to reveal the identity surrounding the myth of fame and am excited by the possibility that ones anonymity can be rediscovered.” Anthony Lister

Each canvas has its place in the timeline of Lister’s life, revealing his passing interests, social consciousness, and perception of the future. His influences are varied: graffiti, installations, stenciling, Pop art, comic book imagery, cartoons and his recollections of childhood when everything seemed fascinating and animated contemporary mythology ruled his television screen.

A ceaseless observer….Poet, Anthony paints from a world all his own. He pushes forward taking with him the academic structure that has defined his bold style and ideology….with a narrative that no doubt separates him from his contemporaries. Always moving forward, forcefully linear, Anthony’s paintings manifest from the very depths of social & self discovery….He reinvents the standards as a painter and forever eroding the rules which have come to define his importance. In his latest body of work Lister explores the current idea of celebrity at a time when the art world has in some ways grown into the mainstream… and has thus reshaped artists into Heroes & Rockstars.” - Robert Fontaine

Anthony Lister was born in Brisbane, Australia in 1979 and he received his BFA at Queensland College of Art in 2001. He was a pioneering force in the stencil and street art movement in Brisbane before moving to New York City in 2003 to apprentice under Max Gimblett. He employs a sophisticated, fine art, painterly style in both his street art and his works exhibited inside galleries. High and low culture clash in his paintings, drawings, and installations where boorish contemporary mythology, flirtatious ballerinas, bad-tempered old masters, and imperious vamps raucously coexist. With exhibitions worldwide, Lister today lives and works in Sydney and is represented by the Robert Fontaine Gallery. www.anthonylister.com
